摘要:knowledgegapsinnanomaterialfateandtoxicitycurrentlylimittheabilityofriskassessmentstocharacterizetheenvironmentalimplicationsofnanomaterials.thisproblemisfurthercomplicatedbythelackofstandardizedcharacterizationandpreparationmethodologiesforresearcherstogaintheneededinformationtoassistriskassessors.inthepresentstudy,dataweregeneratedtodetermineifmultiwallednanotube(mwnt)fateandtoxicityarealteredbyengineeredsurfacemodificationsorbydifferentdispersalmethods.whiledissolvedorganicmatterwasagooddispersingagentofmwntsinwater,thehumicacidfractionwasamoreeffectivedispersantthanthefulvicacidfraction.whenstabilizedinorganicmatter,thefunctionalgroupattachedtothemwntcontrolleditstoxicity.underivatizedmwntsinducedrelativelymoderatetoxicitytoceriodaphniadubiaafter96h(25±19%survivalat26mg/l),whilehydrophilicgroups(hydroxyl,carboxyl)reducedthistoxicity(93±12%survivalat48mg/l).however,otherfunctionalgroups(alkyl,amine)increasedtoxicity(0±0%survivalat<15mg/l).indispersalmethodstudies,sonicationofmwntsincreasedfragmentationrelativetomagneticstirring.thesonicationtreatmentofmwntsalsoslightlyreducedthemortalityofc.dubiainthewatercolumnbutincreasedtoxicityinthesedimenttoleptocheirusplumulosusandhyalellaazteca.findingsinthepresentstudyindicatethatnanotubesengineeredforspecificapplicationsneedtobemanagedindependentlyandthatlaboratorymethodstodisperseandtestnanotubesinbioassaysneedtobestandardizedtoobtainrepeatableresultsforcomparisonofmaterials.
